Cosby Cricket Club Lost 13 runs

Match report Defeat from the jaws of victory, as the 2nd XI collapse from a winning position against local rivals Dunton Bassett!

Match Report vs Dunton Bassett II (a), Sat July 2nd.

Everything started so well when captain John Harrop won the toss again, and with last weeks positive result in mind and overcast conditions he once more decided to bowl.

Things started well in the field with Sanjay Patel and Gary Whetton keeping things tight first up and then senior bowler Whetton taking a one handed catch for the cameras off his own bowling to get the all important breakthrough. However some steady batting after that from Duntons middle order made it apparent that despite their lowly league position they were not going to be a walkover. Indeed with 10 overs remaining they were handily placed at 145 for 5 and looking on course for a big score. During the final 10 overs though the seconds finally discovered a bit of energy in the field and only conceded a further 39 runs. This was largely due to the luckless Sanjay Patels continued economical bowling and the steady stream of wickets from the other end supplied by 2nd XI spin king Andy Gray picking up his 2nd six wicket haul of the season.

With Dunton finishing on 194 for 9, the 2nd XI although dispondent about a less than impressive fielding performance, were somewhat relieved not to be chasing a score in excess of 200 which looked possible at one stage.

After what will surely be the most impressive tea of the season (Smoked salmon, home made vol au vents and strawberries and cream. Gemma take note!) the batsmen approached their task with initial relish.

Mike Potter and Steve Bickle put on 44 for the first wicket in 10 overs. This was then built upon by Sanjay Patel who looked in imperious form before he got out to what he described as the worst ball bowled all day for an elegant looking 18. This bought Simon 'Sausage' Jones and Charlie Gibbons together who were having little trouble scoring above the required rate. The pair had put on 53 before Sausage fell for 42 to a dubious looking LBW. Despite the dismissal of Sos, victory still looked imminent as Gibbons and Todd took the score to 162 for 4 with 11 overs remaining. This is where it all started going horribly wrong for the 2s. Gibbons was caught off what looked like a no-ball for 28 and after his departure the remaining batsmen just crumbled. All of a sudden runs were hard to come by and wickets kept falling as Todd, Harrop and Gray all went cheaply. This had youngest team member Will Cave and eldest GaryWhetton at the crease, and when Whetton spanked his first ball for 4 the momentum appeared to have swung back to Cosby. Unfortunately his second ball which deserved the same outcome ended up going straight up and getting caught. This left Cave and last man Bills needing 14 off 23 balls, the task proved too great as Cave was caught behind 3 balls later and the team had lost it's last 6 wickets for just 19 runs.

Points: Cosby II (6), Dunton Bassett II (24).

MOM: Simon Jones

Verdict: A dreadful collapse from a winning position leaves a lot of work to do in the next few weeks if we are serious about promotion!
