Match Report vs Market Bosworth II (a), Saturday 9th July 2005.

On a perfect day for cricket a tricky looking fixture against a notoriously difficult to beat Market Bosworth team turned out to be a relatively comfortable looking victory for the reserves by the margin of 56 runs.

Captain John Harrops good fortune with the coin mercifully continued at Bosworth and he had no hesitation in asking Bosworth to field in the energy sapping conditions. The innings got off to a typically brisk start with Steve Bickle and stand new opening partner Alex White putting on 34 before Bickle fell for 14 in the 7th over. White back in the side after missing the previous four games continued where he had left off previously scoring his third half century of the season before falling in the 25th over to leave the 2s 100 for 4. This quickly became 116 for 6 as Harrop departed without bothering the scorers and then Simon Jones was dismissed for 22. With 15 overs remaining and only 4 wickets in hand batting the overs and getting a reasonable score appeared to be the best the 2's could hope for, however no-one had told this to Lewis Todd and Duncan Clarke who in the next 12 overs put on a match winning stand of 72, before Todd eventually was dismissed for a well made 47. Clarke went on to register his best score of the season with 30 not out, and took the score upto 211 for 8 with some valuable assistance from Gary Whetton and Will Cave.

The seconds took to the field in the knowledge that they had dug themselves out of a whole with the bat and had a good score to defend. The total always appeared to be a bit beyond the Bosworth batsmen, thanks to some typically mean bowling from Whetton and Clarke, but there was no way they were going to hand their wickets away. The first mini breakthrough came courtesy of spinner Andy Gray who reduced Bosworth from 70 for2 to 88 for 4. After this some stubborn resistance left the reserves with just 15 overs to get 6 wickets, so Harrop turned to his most experienced bowler Ken Needham. The 109 year old Needham rolled back the years and produced a masterclass in accurate bowling removing 4 of the Bosworth batsmen for just 18 runs off his 7 overs, this included the robust figure of Goodwin who had frustrated the bowlers for the best part of 30 overs. A wicket for Whetton left Bosworth with 7 overs to negotiate with just 1 wicket remaining. The last pair were resisting the bowling of Whetton so Harrop turned back to opening bowler Duncan Clarke. The plan worked excellently as 5 balls later Davies clipped one to mid-wicket where the athletic figure of Steve (or should it be Jonty?) Bickle stuck out his hand and took the match winning catch to give the 2nds another 24 points.

Points: Cosby II (24), Market Bosworth II (5)

MOM: Ken Needham

Verdict: A hard earned victory with a match winning bowling speel from veteran bowler Ken Needham the difference between a win and a draw.
