Match report Solid start for 2nd XI with winning draw against Dunton

Match Report: Saturday 26th April 2008
Cosby II v Dunton Bassett II

The 2nd XI started the season keen to make up for last years disappointments with a mixture of new faces as well as a few familiar faces that we hadn’t seen for a while. There was a mood of uncertainty about the team as they were missing plenty of previous seasons regulars but the atmosphere was definitely lifted when we the oppo arrived and we saw they had an average age of roughly 15 (Steve Dann excluded).

New skipper Sausage made an inauspicious start to his reign by losing the toss and the 2s were invited to have a bat. Meredith and Russell Sullivan opened the innings and took advantage early on of some wayward Dunton bowling, with Sullivan in particular tucking in to the buffet that was the Dunton Bassett attack. The pair went on their way with aplomb with Sullivan passing his 50 before drinks. After drinks Sullivan started chancing his arm a bit more whilst Gok Wan continued with his steady accumulation. The partnership was eventually broken for 138 when Sullivan hit one straight up for an aggressive 78. Meredith carried on with his innings ably assisted by Jamie Kendrick and went past his 50 and onto make 62 before being caught on the boundary.

The team were looking well set for a big score and after a couple of overs of introspection Phil Needham started clearing the ropes with regularity scoring 37 runs in no time including 5 sixes. A flurry of wickets late on in the search of runs meant the 2s finished on 241 for 8 declared with a ball to spare as number 11 batsman Pete Sullivan was busy making the tea.

During the tea interval it was the general consensus that we would have way too much for the inexperienced Dunton outfit. Cosbys new-found new ball partnership of Paul Wood and Phil Needham bowled with good discipline but were denied an early breakthrough when Duntons opener Seymour was dubiously given not out from a sharp stumping by Russ Sullivan. The breakthrough eventually came when Duntons other opener Tarbox knicked one through to Sullivan for 8 in the 16th over. In came one of the young Pickerings and despite the best efforts of Needham and Wood the pair continued to frustrate the Cosby bowlers.

Young Paddy Radley came into the attack for Cosby and after some early tap set about his task well, ably assited by first Wood and then the returning Steve ‘Rupert’ Bloxham. Paddy eventually got the breakthrough removing Pickering for 31 and then trapping Seymour for 52 lbw. He managed to take a third wicket with a fine caught and bowled and finished with 3 for 56. However at this point Duntons experienced campaigner Steve Dann was at the crease and was defying the Cosby attack.

After another controversial not given stumping Matt Bills was introduced to the attack with 6 over remaining with instructions to try and win the match. He made the best possible start picking up a wicket with his 1st ball and then getting another 3 balls later with Sullivan finally getting his stumping. Bills then picked up another wicket in his 2nd over with a catch at short cover from Paul Wood leaving Bills with the then remarkable figures of 3 for 0 and Dunton now 7 down. Radley and Bills continued in the last couple of overs to try and spin a win for the 2s but Dann and Murgatroyd defied them to see out a draw that Cosby had much the better of.

Result: Draw

MOM: Russell Sullivan, his aggressive early knock set the 2s up for their big score which meant they were always in control.

Points: Cosby 18 pts, Dunton 6 pts.

Verdict: A satisfactory result given expectations at the start of the match and thanks to some good batting the 2s were in control. Early wickets were the key and when they didn’t materialise it was always going to be a struggle to press home for the win.
