Match Report: Cosby II vs Bardon Hill II, Saturday May 10th 2008

After the previous weeks match was abandoned due to rain the 2s were keen to carry on their positive start after their opening day result against Dunton. Things started ominously when skipper Sausage lost the toss, but breathed a huge sigh of relief when the Bardon captain decided to have a bowl on the hottest day of the season so far.

However the early optimism from batting first was soon eradicated thanks to a combination of decent Bardon bowling and some dreadful batting from Cosbys top order. After 12 overs the 2s were in real trouble at 15 for 5 with Meredith, Sullivan, Kendrick, Fairbrother and Jones all back in the pavilion and other than Sullivan none of them had bothered the scorers.

At the crease were Dave Thorpe and Neil Measures with Thorpey looking in good touch and Measures in understandable watchful mood. Thorpe went about the Bardon attack with relish playing them to all corners of the ground and all the time Measures was ably assisting him picking up runs where he could. The pair dominated the innings with a crucial stand of 135 before Measures fell for an extremely patient 37 with a few overs to go. Thorpe carried on his way before eventually falling in the last over for an outstanding knock of 91. Three further wickets fell in the pursuit of runs but the 2s closed on a very unlikely 171 for 9.

At tea the feeling was that even though the score was under par we had got out of jail thanks to the partnership from Measures and Thorpe, and if we bowled with discipline we had a score capable of winning the match.

Again the confidence appeared to be mis-placed as the new ball partnership of Whitehead and Wood failed to produce the required early wickets despite some near chances and dropped catches. It wasn’t until the 20th over with Bardon well set that the 1st wicket fell thanks to a run out from Rich Fairbrother. However the bowling continued to be erratic with Neil Measures struggling for rhythm but he did get a breakthrough thanks to Sullivan catching a skier behind the stumps. Bardon did not look in any trouble though and had 15 overs to get 30 runs with 8 wickets in hand.

At this point Saus turned to Matt Bills to try and repeat his performance against Dunton. Bills didn’t quite hit those heights but performed admirably again picking up 2 for 18 off his 5 overs. Thorpe came into the attck as well and bowled well picking up 2 wickets in 2 balls at one stage to finish with impressive figures of 2 for 14. However the 2s simply didn’t have the runs on the board and Bardon despite the late innings wobble achieved their target with overs to spare and 4 wickets in hand.

Result: Loss

Verdict: Poor starts with Bat and Ball meant the 2s were always struggling. Batsmen need to apply themselves more and bowlers need to bowl with more discipline.
