Cosby Cricket Club Mid-Week XI v Bitteswell on Tue 15 Jul 2008 at
Cosby Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Middle order mishaps mean more mid-week misery.

Another week goes by in the adventures of the mid-week team and it was a case of different cast but same old story against Bitteswell (not Blaby as some misguided members of the team thought we were playing). There were 4 changes from the previous weeks side with Woody, Frank and Jamie making their bows for the mid week team and Whitey captaining the side in the absence of Roger “Adam Gilchrist” Cook.

Acting vice skipper Podge won the toss and decided we would have a bat on our now extremely worn wicket/sand pit. Things started brightly with Podge and Steve “The Undertaker” Wagstaff scoring briskly putting on 27 for the 1st wicket before Edwards bowled Lewis for 11. The score moved into the 40s when we lost 2 wickets in an over when McCann removed Scouse (2) and Waggy (23). At 45 for 3 off 7 overs we appeared reasonably set for a decent total. However the middle order again proved our downfall as we moved from 50 for 3 to 60 for 7 with Owen, Kendrick, Macca, Spencer and Pep contributing 11 between them. Fortunately Woody and Sheriff were able to put on 35 unbeaten for the eighth wicket with Woody scoring 26 not out, for us to close on 95 for 7.

We came out to bowl semi confident of a win after Woody and Sheriffs partnership had given us at least a reasonable total to bowl at. The total looked less imposing however when Woodys first over went for 13. However he made amends with a fine caught and bowled in his 2nd over to remove the dangerous looking Miller. Whitey was bowling well from the rugby pitch end taking 2 wickets including a stumping by Podge!!!

At 43 for 3 off 5 overs it became apparent containing Bitteswell wasn’t an option and to win we would have to bowl them out. Whitey turned to his twin spin kings in Sheriff and Stealth. Things looked promising for Andy when Fradley was removed but a few lusty blows from Philpott swung the game back Bitteswells way. Billso worked his magic again when he removed Philpott with his 2nd ball and Bitteswell were 5 down still needing 30 runs. When Billso got his 2nd wicket thanks to a catch from Sheriff and Steve Pep got an lbw the score was 79 for 7 and very much game on. However Bitteswell still had batting to come in the form of Ian “Mr Personality” Bateman. It was scratchy but Edwards and Bateman took them to their target with 4 overs still to spare.

Another 30 runs and this would have been a close game going to the finish, however we seem to say this almost every week and until we start capitalising on the middle overs of the innings we will continue to be on the wrong end of these results!
