Leicester Ivanhoe v Cosby Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 10 Aug 2008 at 2pm
Cosby Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Wretch and Thorpey guide Sunday XI to victory
Match Report; Leicester Ivanhoe v Cosby, Sunday 10th August 2008.
The day started in a disappointing manner for the Sunday team with the extremely late withdrawal of Phone box and the ensuing rush around to get another player in. After much texting and phoning the 11th man was confirmed as “Downtown” Ellis Brown.
The Sunday team arrived at the Ivanhoe to be greeted by familiar faces and a decent looking game to look forward to. Things started brightly as Billso won the toss against serial opponent Chris Harvey and decided to have a bowl. The new(ish) ball partnership of Wretch and Sideshow Jamie started well and were bowling good tight lines from pretty much word go. Jamie picked up a wicket in his 1st over when Frank took a catch at cover. When Wretch picked up another wicket with a beauty of a delivery next over the Sunday team were handily placed with Ivanhoe 7 for 2. Things improved even further a few overs later when Young Coxy managed to run out Ivanhoe’s other opener after a very good bit fielding.
Jamie and Wretch were taken out of the attack and the Ivanhoe offered their first stab of resistance with Newberry looking in good form. Facing the young bowling partnership of Curt and Frank he was building a decent looking innings and when he hit Curt for consecutive sixes it looked game on. Holloway was taken out of the attack and Frank switched ends and the swap paid dividends as Wretch caught Newberry in the deep for a well made 40. At the other end Hursty had been introduced and was proving menacing with the ball. He picked up the wickets of Underwood and Lafferty in his 8 overs and had Ivanhoe wobbling at 85 for 6.
Chris and Jay Harvey were at the crease and the Sunday team were hopeful we could bowl Ivanhoe out cheaply. However the pair were able to see off Hursty despite some near misses and Jay Harvey took a liking for Thorpeys medium pace as Ivanhoe took the score past 100. Curt and Ellis were introduced to the attack and the 2 youngsters bowled well. Ellis took his first senior wickets picking up 2 for 10 off his 2 overs leaving Ivanhoe 8 down with a few overs remaining. Wretch was reintroduced and despite a couple of decent shots from Boris he managed to pick up his wicket and only 1 more wicket was needed to bowl the Ivanhoe out. Despite the best efforts of Curt and Wretch and thanks largely to the skipper Harvey who finished 35 not out, Cosby couldn’t take the final wicket and Ivanhoe finished 158 for 9.
After tea Cosby set to chase down the target with an unusual looking batting order with Baker and Kendrick 11 and 9 and Captain Billso promoted up to number 5. Things started well with the little and large of Cosby CC going out to bat. Hursty was dominating the strike and hit 3 early boundaries and looked in good form. However in the 5th over Curt was dismissed caught behind again for his 2nd consecutive duck on a Sunday. When Hurstys wicket fell as well a few overs later for 17 a tight finish looked likely with Cosby 26 for 2. Thorpey and Frank were at the crease and put on 17 before Frank also went for 0 and the skipper strode out to bat. Billso despatched his 2nd ball for 4 but that was the end of his run scoring. In the next 9 overs Billso and Thorpey put on 21 as they set to consolidate. When Billso eventually played another attacking shot he only succeeded in hitting it straight to a fielder to get caught for 4.
Wretch came out 6 and with Thorpey still there and 18 overs remaining victory still looked possible. The pair batted superbly picking up singles off the good balls offered up and despatching the bad balls to the boundary. Thorpey was the 1st to his 50 before suffering a bout of cramp and eventually getting caught for 56. The pair had put on 90 for the 5th wicket and taken us to the brink of victory. Wretch also went past 50 for the first time ever and when Coxy hit a four down to 3rd man Cosby had won with 11 balls to spare.
MOM: Good bowling all round and 2 excellent innings from Thorpey and Wretch. MOM goes to wretch for his 2 wickets and maiden 50.
Verdict: Much better performance with the bat with Thorpey and Wretch showing the juniors the value of protecting your wicket and running well. Hope they took the lesson in.
