Match report C2 Unit prevail in top of the table encounter

Mountsorrell II vs Cosby II, Saturday 4th July 2009

The mighty 2s travelled over to sunny Mountsorrell with a full strength side for their much anticipated clash with their fellow high fliers. In fact so strong were the 2nd team they even took with them an umpire (Ken), scorer (Mini Coop) and photographer (former Chris Griffin wannabe Billso).

Arriving at the ground early the 2s decided to get in some fielding practice some of which can be seen in the photos taken of the days action. Veteran Captain Paul Wood went out for the toss not wearing the usual intimidatory muscle vest, obviously confident he could overawe the young Mountsorrell captain. The tactic didn’t work and Woody had lost another toss and the 2s had been put in. The 2s went into the dressing rooms to hear Woodys pre-match pep talk and Baker apologise for being a miserable git the previous week. Also the pre-match Naked off was won in spectacular fashion by Gary “Torchwood” Kirby sporting a new more aerodynamic appearance, indeed it was commented that there was now more hair on the skippers head than there was around Kirbos scrotum. With no response to this Veteran promptly awarded Torchwood the All the Gear T-shirt for a 2nd successive week. The 2s went out to bat with the now established opening partnership of Vice and Grice. It was also around this time Billso abandoned his plan of getting some photos of the day, as faced with an open bar, sky sports and a wide screen TV watching the Lions take on South Africa would be a far better way to spend the first part of the afternoon.

Things got off to a positive start as the Lions took an early lead after Stephen Jones slotted home a penalty after the Springbok front row popped up in a scrum. South Africa were soon on level terms however when Morne Steyn hit a penalty over in return. On the cricket pitch things were going quite positively as well with Vice and Tavare looking in good form. Just as Shane Williams was dancing his way in for the 1st Lions try the 2s lost their 1st wicket as Russ dollied up a catch and was caught for 23. Baker went out to bat but was soon on his way back having made 5 but again at the same time Shane Williams was running under the posts after some great work by Riki Flutey. The Lions went in at half time 15-6 in front but this success seemed inversely proportional to the success of the C2 unit as Henshaw, Ho Chi Minh, Veteran and Frank were back in the pavilion and the 2s were 80 for 6.

Hero Cooper and Odd Socks Holloway were at the crease and went about repairing the Cosby innings in their own particular ways. Super Cooper hitting what he saw and Curt with his usual resilience, on the rugby pitch things were still going in the Lions favour as after Jones and Steyn again swapped penalties Ugo Monye intercepted a loose Springbok pass and ran the 80 metres for a great try. Another late Jones penalty after South African indiscipline saw the Lions secure a famous victory 28 – 9 and with it restore some pride to the legendary red jersey. Anyway back to the cricket.

Coops and Curt were both doing their best to get the 2s up to a decent score. Cooperstar was looking typically aggressive and was making Mountsorrell pay for dropping him early with some trademark lusty blows. The Special One had moved on to 46 when he was eventually dismissed in rather bizarre fashion. Coops played and missed at a ball and the wicket keeper who was up to the stumps took the ball and appeared to flick the bails with his gloves. Now Coops was well in his ground so wasn’t stumped but began walking off convinced he’d been bowled. There was no appeal or celebration from Mountsorrell but Hero kept walking so the wicket stood and the 2s were 145 for 7.

Big strode out to bat at number 9 and carried on where Hero had left off hitting some big shots to all corners of Mountsorrell and the 2s were all of a sudden looking in a decent position. Odd Socks also started hitting a few realising the time for defiance was over. Curt made a hard fought 26 before he was eventually dismissed by a good stumping (not the best of the day, more on this later). With just a couple of overs remaining Trigger went out to bat determined to prove to everyone he could bat. However just an over later he was on his way back having been caught and bowled for 2. Suffice to say point not proven. Kirbs was the last man in with 4 balls remaining with instructions from Woody to not get out, now Torchwood is from the same batting school as his dad (i.e. 4 and out) and his attempted defence didn’t fair too well and was caught behind for 0. The 2s were all out for 185 with 2 balls remaining and Phil 23 not out.

The 2s went into tea relatively pleased with themselves having dug themselves out of a hole with the bat thanks to Coops, Curt and Big. They were even more pleased when they saw the spread the Mountsorrell tea lady put on. A definite tea of the season contender met with most peoples approval, especially Baz who if we believe the conservative estimates had just the 3 slices of cheesecake.

The C2 Unit went out to field confident they had posted a competitive total, however Mountsorrell felt equally confident due to their reputation for scoring big runs. Early doors it appeared that Mountsorrell were right to feel positive about the run chase after a few wayward overs from Big got them off to a reasonable start. In fact 7 deliveries into the innings the 2s were faced with the prospect of bowling with the spare ball for the remainder of the match after the new ball was smacked into the impenetrable jungle beyond the boundary line.

The arrival of the spare ball (as well as Neddys removal from the bowling attack) brought about a change in fortune with the ball for the 2nd XI as first they slowed Mountsorrell down and then Veteran Captain Paul Wood achieved the breakthrough when their opener guided one to Hero in the gully. This wicket caused the Mountsorrell top order to go into freefall as Trigger picked up a couple of wickets from the car park end and Veteran claimed a further 2 wickets including a caught and bowled that saw some chuckle brothers-esque calling between Woody and Vice (“to me, to you, to you, to me…oh you catch it your there anyway”). Mountsorrell had been reduced to 33 for 5 and the 2s were well in control.

At this point Mountsorrell offered some resistance with their clean hitting number 7 looking especially dangerous and appearing to take a liking for both the bowling of Woody and the Weatherman. Veteran took himself out of the attack finishing with 3 for 30 off his 10 overs and brought on Torchwood Kirby to see if he could get the 6th wicket. What followed was a couple more over s of carnage from the Mountsorrell batsmen as they took the score up to 77 for 5.

A double bowling change was made with Frank coming on at the car park end and Big returning from the top end. This double change appeared to work the oracle as Frank was able to do what no-one had done previous and stop the number 7 from scoring and Big was able to claim the 6th wicket with a relatively simple caught and bowled. The 7th wicket followed in quick and spectacular fashion. Neddy bowled his trademark leg side delivery, Vice took the ball well outside the leg stump but the Mountsorrell batsman had over balanced and quicker than Nige can knock up an egg fried rice Russ had removed the bails for a quite remarkable stumping. The remainder of the Mountsorrell batting order offered very little resistance as Phil took a further 2 wickets to finish with 4 for 20 and Frank bowled the number 11 meaning the 2s had bowled out one of their closest rivals for 91 and claim another 24 points.

Result: Cosby II win by 94 runs

Points: Mountsorrell II 4 points, Cosby II 24 points

Quote of the day: Billso is quizzing Frank about his adventures drinking Whiskey the other week causing his non appearance at Countesthorpe:
Billso: What was it, were you ill or had you been grounded?
Frank: I was ill, I would have been ok but people kept giving me water!

Down the Bull later in the evening Baz is talking to one of his lady friends about how to make money from pornography.
Baz: To make any money it would have to appeal to a niche market, something like necrophilia.
Trigger: I’d be up for that, I’d do that. What’s a necrophiliac?

MOM: Immaculate under the high ball, other than one missed touch the kicking was impeccable and every time he joined the line he consistently broke through, Rob Kearney extends the fine tradition of Lions full-backs. At the cricket it goes to Russ Sullivan for his 23 runs and 5 dismissals behind the stumps including that stumping.

Verdict: The C2 unit showed character to get to a total of 185 all out and then bowled and fielded well to dismiss Mountsorrell for such a low total. The 2s have won all 10 games they have played this season which is no mean achievement no matter what class of cricket you play in. Standards must be kept up over the 2nd half of the season starting next week at Enderby.
