Cosby Cricket Club 1st XI v Ratby Town on Sat 11 Sep 2010 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn Winning (14pts)

Match report The 1st XI gained a winning draw against relegation threatened Ratby.

After losing the toss, Cosby were put in on a track which had received a soaking when the covers were removed. Waggy was dismissed 2nd ball to a snorter from Lee and only 7 runs came in 7 overs as Baz and Skip found life tough. Baz went on the attack and upped the rate to 39 off 13 before being dismissed by Cockerill for a well made 29. When Skip and Odell went soon after, 56-3 off 20 didnt look good. Enter Charlie who once again made batting look easy as he, Bayliss and then Podge rebuilt the innings. It was the arrival of Darren Brooks which ultimately changed the game in Cosby's favour. Starting cautiously, he & Charlie gradually built momentum with good running between the wickets and keeping out the good ball. Charlie eventually perished caught on the boundary for 39 but Darren continued the attack, brutally. 40 runs came off the last 4 overs and 20 off the last as Darren ended 72 not out in a brilliant innings which gave the team momentum - 190 was a great total when 166 looked more likely. Cockerill bowled all the way through for 5-40, a great effort.

After tea, Skip gave the team talk saying it was vital to keep the ball up to the bat of a drying wicket. After an inauspicious start, Brett removed Chadwick caught behind. With Mikey bowling with good hoop at the car park end, Roger came on to slow the rate further and got junior Cockerill out, well held by Brett at long off. A rain shower brought the teams off for 20 mins but stragely, the umpire decided we'd just play on for 45 overs!!!!! It was agreed to bowl until 7.30pm, assuming it would be dark by then! Darren replaced Mikey to bowl a great spell of 8 overs for 26. This tied the impressive Cockerill down and Roger snared 3 more with catches on the boundary. When Mikey effected a brilliant run out from the boundary followed by a remarkable run out from Roger, the 1s were in the box seat. Ratby captain Leggit arrived at the crease and started swinging - in fading light, the fielding became a joke as picking up the ball was impossible. The climax arrived at 7.40pm with Ratby needing 9 off the last over bowled by Roger. Only 5 singles came from 5 balls leaving a 4 off the last - it went for 2 and the 1s held on for the winning draw as Ratby sunk to their feet with dejection.

A great game played in a great spirit by both teams. Many teams would've walked off in the fading light but the 1s gave Ratby every chance to effect the win. Brooksy' innings made the difference as did Baz's early knock which meant wickets remained in hand for the slog at the end. When you cant win the game, not losing is they key and the 1s have begun to learn that this season.

14 pts and onto the season finale against Oakham, who need to win to stay up............could be an interesting day.
