Cosby Cricket Club 2nd XI v Loughborough Greenfields II on Sun 10 Jul 2005 at 2pm

Match report
One of the best performances of the season by the reserves, but just not enough for victory as Greenfields hang on by a solitary wicket.
Match Report vs Loughborough Greenfields (h), 10th July 2005.
Another baking hot day resulted in another satisfactory result as the 2nds were able to secure a winning draw against fellow high fliers Loughborough Greenfields.
The coin again landed kindly for the captain and again unsurprisingly Harrop decided we would have a bat in temperatures that would make a camel sweat. White and Bickle supplied another rapid start to the innings before White fell to a sharp caught and bowled with the score on 29 in the 7th over. This brought Neil 'Back from Retirement' Brown to the crease, and he and Jonty continued score at a healthy rate until Bickle was bowled for a typically quick paced 28. Another one back from retirement then joined Brown, as Dave 'Treacle Feet' Needham went out to bat and proceeded to guide/edge the ball around the park. However with the score ob 79 for 2 the momentum shifed as 3 wickets were lost for just 17 runs as Brown, Needham and Clarke all departed in quick succession.
Wobbling on 96 for 5 and still 25 overs to go Captain John Harrop joined Dave Owen at the crease and started going about repairing the innings. This was done to good effect with some initial stubborn protection of their wickets and then some hard hitting from both batsmen. The partnership was eventually broken 15 overs later with a further 83 runs added, when Owen attempting to hit a full toss for 6 holed out to deep square leg for 48. Harrop and Whetton continued the good work with Harrop getting his first fifty of the season and Whetton hitting a rapid 16 before Harrop was dismissed with the score on 205. Some further good hitting by Gary Whetton and number 9 Ken Needham managed to boost the score further until Whetton was well caught at cover. Young Matt Cox was able to hang around with Needham for an over or two before he became the 5th victim for Greenfields captain Lomax and Cosby were 219 for 9 with 5 balls left. In those 5 balls last man Matt Bills and Ken Needham were able to add a further 11 runs before Needham was run out on the last ball of the innings, with the team finishing 230 all out.
After a vol au vent free tea the 2nds took to the field knowing they would have to bowl well due to Loughboroughs reputation for scoring lots of runs. This reputation looked well deserved as the 2's struggled to get into the Greenfields batsmen early on and with the score on 51 for 1 it looked as if a tight game might be on the way. The introduction of Neil 'He bowls as well you know?' Brown paid instant dividend as he had the dangerous looking Horner caught by Steve Bickle at cover for 27 inj his 2nd over. A stand of 40 between Roberts and Upton appeared to have put Greenfields back in contention at 90 for 2 with 20 overs left and plenty of men left to come in.
Harrop turned to his two most experienced bowlers, Ken Needham and Gary Whetton, and their nagging accuracy changed the innings completely. Firstly Needham had the wall like Roberts stumped by Harrop for 20, and the over later Upton sensing that he needed to get on with it attemted to launch Whetton into Littlethorpe, however he only managed to pick out the ever reliable hands (hold your laughter) of Matt Bills at long on and effectively end their interest in getting the runs. When Needham picked up his 2nd victim an over later, and Whetton removed the dangerous Loughborough captain Lomax and the not quite so dangerous number 8 Thomas in the same over, Cosby were really in the driving seat. Loughborough had slipped to 116 for 7 in the 31st over and Cosby went all out for the win. Clarke returned at the car park end and after the experiment with Bills nearly paid off Brown came back at the rugby pitch end. Brown removed the ever ready to have a swing number 9 in his first over and the number 10 with a terriffic slower ball the over later. This left Greenfields 26 balls to survive to prevent the 2's winning and getting full points. Despite some very close shaves from both Brown and Clarke Loughborough were able to hang on and prevent Cosby getting maximum points. However with the scoring going 19 points to 8 in Cosbys favour everyone was atisfied with the result over our top of the table rivals
Points: Cosby II (19), Loughborough Greenfields (8)
MOM: John Harrop
Verdict: A satisfying result, and one of the best performances of the season, against fellow high fliers makes it a near on perfect weekend for the reserves.
