Match report 1st XI Collapse to Tie with Market Harborough!!

MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Market Harborough II, Saturday 3rd May 2008, Victory Park, Cosby

At 6.40pm the previous evening a localised downpour left Victory Park underwater and the possibilty of play the following day unlikely! I must first acknowledge the hard work put in by George Tarbox, Alex White and Steve Bayliss on Saturday morning to have the ground in just about playable conditions!

Needless to say the wicket was wet and winning the toss was likely to have proved decisive. The Harborough skipper called heads and it landed a tail! 'We will have a bowl' was the unsuprising statement from Captain Hurst.

The Wicket was very wet with every delivery leaving a crater in the wicket but the Cosby attack bowled very well, putting the ball in good areas and making it incredibly difficult for the opposition to score. It was Alex White who really excelled, his low skiddy action was a real handful for the Harborough openers and the breakthrough came when Whitey cleaned up with an inswinging yorker!

Wickets continued to tumble and all the bowlers got in on the act. Roger Cook again bowled superbly and his figures of 3-28 were well deserved. Harborough, to there credit stuck to their task and some big hitting late on meant they finished on 124-9. A total that was, in truth, not really enough!

The Tea interval came and went on what was no doubt the best day of the year so far (weather wise) and Cosby set about chasing down the total set.

Sampson and Todd have developed a good understanding and it continued to show as they both scored freely. Todd once again showed his no-nonsense approach and smashed four 6s on his way to consecutive 50s! When He was out for 54 in the 17th over Cosby were cruising to Victory at 92-1.

Sampson fell shortly after and then Victory Park witnessed something quite remarkable! A dramatic collapse that ultimately saw 10 wickets fall for just 32 runs!!

O'Dell, Hurst, Thorpe, M White, A White, Baker, Bayliss and Cook all dismissed in different ways, but all with devasting effect!

Even when 121-8 with Bayliss at the crease Cosby were confident, but he was bowled leaving Cook & Gray to stear Cosby home, but it wasn't to be! Needing 2 runs to win with 7 overs still to play, Cook nudged on past short fine leg, He ran the first and made up his mind he was coming for the second. Only to be run about by six yards! The match ended in a Tie. A quite remarkable game.

RESULT: MATCH TIED

POINTS: Cosby (9) Market Harborough (11)

MOM: Alex White (Outstanding Bowling Performance)

VERDICT: Credit to MH, they never gave up and fought for everything. However, Cosby should have won this game very comfortably!! Lessons need to be learnt and quickly!
