Match report 20 May 2009 : 1st XI Improve but still beaten at Rothley

MATCH REPORT: Cosby V Rothley Park, Away, Saturday 16th May 2009

With rain in the air winning the toss was vital and the skipper duly failed! The Rothley skipper unsurprisingly asked Cosby to bat and with Sampson arriving late Captain Hurst took it upon himself to Open with Thorpedo.

The Innings started positively enough with Damien taking the attack to the Rothley bowlers. The 50 partnership was soon up but Thorpey fell for 11 when one kept low and he was adjudged LBW. Billy Blue Gloves came in at 3 and added impetus to the innings but when he was caught for 10 Cosby were 78-2 from 20 overs.

What followed was symtematic of the season so far as Hurst, Sampson, Meredith, Todd & Spencer all were dismissed in the space of 7 overs and Cosby were in real trouble again at 100-7 from 27!!

With all hope of a positive performance slipping away Mikey White & The Student Croucher set about giving the innings some respectability by hitting their way out of trouble. To be fair it worked and Cosby steadily started to think that 180 or even 200 might be possible as first the 133 then the 150 came up!

Whitey was well on his way to an excellent half century when he was given out LBW for 34 and Croucher was the last man to fall for 24 having secured Cosby a couple more points. Cosby closed on 166

The Tea interval brought the first interesting moment of Ben 'Frank' Spencers' appearance in the 1st XI when he put 7 sugars in his tea and decided it was not sweet enough so added 3 more!!

Cosby set about the task of defending 166 in the belief that early wickets were key. The skipper opted for Dawkins & Croucher to do the damage and they both gratefully accepted the challenge. In truth they both did ok on a helpful wicket but too many four balls let the Rothley Batsmen off the hook!

During Robbie Ds last penultimate over Frank and Ben Cox (substituing for the injured Thorpey) chased after a fine shot through mid-wicket. It was clear to Coxy that the ball was going to win but Frank didnt think so and continued full pelt towards the rope! Young Spencer clearly did not notice the wire fence just beyond the boundary as he was cut in two by the top wire and went over like he had just been eliminated from a Royal Rumble by Stone Cold Steve Austin, much to the amusement of everyone else. In fact nobody seemed to care that he might actually be hurt!!

The 2 Spencer incidents of the day did leave Bayliss to say 'i think there is a bit of the Ako's about him' to which the Captain replied 'what do you mean?' the response was clear - 'He's a bit of a spastic'

Anyway, back to the cricket

The Skipper turned to himself and Cookie to try and make inroads and Cookie with his mercurial Leg Breaks had Rothley on the hop. They just did not know what to do!

With Hurst keeping it tight at the other end Cookie took 3 wickets and had his catching been as good as his bowling this game may have been very tight.

Rothley reached their target with 2 overs to spare and won the game by 6 wkts which didn't really reflect the closeness of the match.

RESULT: Lost by 6 wkts

POINTS: Cosby (7) Rothley (24)

MOM: Ben Croucher - Batted well, bowled well, didnt deserve to be on the losing side.

VERDICT: Improved performance but still much improvement needed with the bat and we MUST hold the Catches!!
